The History of Drums and Music

§ June 6th, 2011 § Filed under Entertainment § Tagged , , § No Comments

Drums have been used for many centuries to produce a unique and rhythmic sound. While the drums have evolved over the years, the principle is still the same. The top of the drum is struck, and it produces a sound that is amplified through its base. Now they are many different types of drums, ranging from handheld ones, to ones that you can barely hold. A few centuries ago, all drums were made by hand and were constructed of natural materials. It was typical to use an animal skin, or other material, to cover the top of the drum. What was important was that it shrunk to create a nice seal around the rim of the base. This way the sound could vibrate throughout, and produce a nice rich sound. Some of the first drums documented were called African drums and were produced in South America. Their design is still used today and there is no other drum that produces its unique sound.
